Eye of the Beholder is one of the most famous dungeon crawling game in 1990 era. It was co-developed by Westwood and Strategic Simulations Inc, and is an official Advanced Dungeons & Dragons computer product. For those who has follow Dungeons and Dragons should know that the original Dungeons and Dragons is a physical game with actual game board and dice. It is quite funny to play it nowadays, but it actually set the standard of today computer Role-Playing games.
As Eye of the Beholder is based on Dungeons and Dragons, we can expect a lot of dungeon crawling in the game. In the beginning of the game, a brief introduction will be served to let us know a little bit background of the game.
As with today most role playing games, Eye of the Beholder offer the team creation section. We can pick the class we like and set the name of our heroes.
Unlike modern role playing games, Eye of the Beholder requires a lot of effort in order to finish the game. It is nearly impossible to finish the game without taking out pen and paper to draw the levels' map. Beside dungeon crawling, we are required to solve many puzzles to complete the game. Invisible walls, moving pits, buttons, traps, auto-reverse walkways and teleporters are some of the important elements that we will meet in the game.
In Eye of the Beholder, characters with different classes will equiped with different ability. Fighters for combat, Mage for attacking spells, Clerics for defensive spells and Thieves for lock picking. Each character in the game can carry a number of items before running out of space.
There are many monsters that we will meet during the game. Some monsters in higher levels are really hard to bring them down, and we have to always play hit and run with them.
Our heroes will get experience points during the game. And of course, the level of the heroes will increase when gather certain experience points.
There are a number of spells that we can play with. At the beginning of the game, we have only a few spells. To get new spells, we need to search for scrolls and scribe it down.
Eye of the Beholder is a difficult game that requires long hour to complete it. To ease your pain, I've include the complete maps in the package. The manual and reference card also included.
