The Chaos Engine is another great game published by The Bitmap Brothers in 1994. It has ultra-smooth-scrolling 256-color VGA graphics and support Sound Blaster for digitize sound.
The story line of The Chaos Engine is that in the future, human create a machine that can warp time and space, but the machine finally gone crazy and turn the gun against human. (Terminator again?)
In The Chaos Engine, we have the option to choose one of the six characters available. Each have their own strength, so it is up to your own preference on which to pick.
In The Chaos Engine, we can either play with a computer character or a real person. There is no option to go alone though. And if we want to play with another person, the other person have to control using joystick and not on the same keyboard.
The level layout of The Chaos Engine is similar to Gods. There are 4 worlds and in each world there are 4 levels. The first world is easy to overcome, but not for world 2 and above.
Frankly speaking, The Chaos Engine is very very difficult to play. We have a very limited life and health level. We will be easily killed if we accidentally hit by the enemies for a few times.
Luckily, passwords will be given after we finish each world. With these password, we can at least start from the world after we die in the game.
There are shops for us to buy some upgrades and life after every two levels. This also means beside killing enemies, we also have to keep collecting the gold. Unlike Gods, the gold will disappear after a few seconds. This give extra difficulties when playing the game.
Overall, The Chaos Engine is a fun but very difficult shoot'em up. I spend a month to complete the game, but is consider very long for a shoot'em up. You can get The Chaos Engine here. I've include the password for World 2 and World 3 in the package. For World 4, please earn it yourself :)
