Lode Runner is one of the first popular computer game in the PC gaming history. It was released in 1983 by Broderbund, and immediately it became a hit.
Lode Runner supports only 4-color CGA graphics, but it's good enough for its purpose. It also have some simple PC Speaker sound effect to improve the atmosphere.
The first time I play Lode Runner was actually on a Apple computer with monochrome green color graphics. And you know what, even with only mono-green graphics, the game play is good enough to hook me onto it for quite some time.
In Lode Runner, our main purpose is to collect the scattered golds while avoiding the enemies. After we collect the golds, a ladder will appear to let us climb to the next level.
We can also hit the brick to create a hole to bury the enemies or make a path to some close area. The hole will recover by it selves after a few seconds. By correctly calculate the timing, we can kill the enemies as they need some time to climb up from a hole.
The level design of Lode Runner is pretty impressive. Some levels really need good skill and timing to solve. There are also bricks that cannot be dug, so we need to be extra careful when go into these area as we cannot bury the enemies there.
