Raptor was released by Apogee in 1994, and it is one of the popular but lame shoot'em up during that time.
The graphics, soundtracks and sound effects in Raptor are very well polished. The problem with Raptor is the developer put too much effort on graphics and animations until forget the essence of shoot'em up: challenging and unique enemies.
Raptor is just too easy to play. After equipping our plane with enough fire power, it is very hard for us to die in the game. The level design of Raptor is poor too. Unlike Raiden or 1943, I just cannot feel the umph by playing Raptor.
All enemies in Raptor look and move too alike and act in one solid unit. Normally in a good shoot'em up, the enemies should have many moving parts like turrets and expendable parts, like from a ground unit and later transform to a sky unit.
There are very little ground unit too. Unlike Raiden where we can see tanks moving and leaving tracks on the ground, all enemies just flying here and there. Really sucks! Extremely boring!
And for the bosses, they are just different in size. They move in a huge block without giving any uniqueness. All of them look the same. If I put them together for you to recognise, you most probably cannot differentiate them.
In conclusion, Raptor is an unattractive shoot'em up with poor level and enemy design. If you like to see how lame Raptor is, please get it and have a try.
