R-Type is a side scrolling shoot'em up released by Irem in 1987. R-Type is widely recognized as one of the classics of the shooter genre from the 1980s arcade. R-Type is not really famous in PC scene as it was not officially ported into DOS version.
In R-Type, we control a space fighter named "Arrowhead" to defend humanity against a mysterious but powerful alien lifeform known as "Bydo", which was later discovered to be not entirely alien in origin.
The gameplay of R-Type follows the usual pattern of other shoot'em ups, meaning that we need to keep restarting the level to remember the correct way to get through a level.
Like Xenon 2, there are number of power-ups that we can pick up during the game. We can also use the power-ups in two modes, either attach the power-up module on our ship or let the power-up module fly by itself for different type of weapon.
There are bosses at the end of each level, and each one is uniquely designed. Of course, each carries they own super power and we need to remember their move to be able to defeat them.
