Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade VGA Version Download and Review

Nov 24, 2008

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was released in 1990, a year after the third installment of Indiana Jones movie was released into theater. The original release supports only 16-color EGA graphics, but later has been re-released in 256-color VGA graphics.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade story line follows closely with the movie, with some parts being elaborate to make the game more difficult to play.

At the beginning, Indy is approached by businessman Walter Donovan, who tells him about the Holy Grail, and of the disappearance of his father.

Indy later travel to a few places in the movie, like Venice, the church, catacomb and the old castle. There, he will meet his father.

However, some scenes in the movie are not included in the game, like Brotherhood of the Grail, Indy's friend Sallah, the Venice water chase scene and the desert battle.

In Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Lucasarts introduce a new point system called "Indy Quotient". Normally, there are several ways to solve a puzzle, by using a good alternative, we can get higher IQ score. Therefore we can keep replaying the game with different approach to get higher score.

Last Crusade was the first Lucasarts game to include the verbs Look and Talk. In several situations, the latter would begin a primitive dialogue system in which the player could choose one of several lines to say. The system was fully evolved in The Secret of Monkey Island and remained in all later LucasArts adventure games.

In conclusion, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is a good adventure games and should not be missed by all Indiana Jones fans. You can get your copy here.

Leisure Suit Larry 3: Passionate Patti in Pursuit of the Pulsating Pectorals Download and Review

Nov 22, 2008

Leisure Suit Larry 3 was released by Sierra in 1989. It still uses 16-color EGA graphics and supports Adlib sound cards only.

The game action takes place on Nontoonyt, the tropical island from Larry 2. The introduction shows that the island has gone through massive development after Larry 2 (again it is a spoof of Honolulu, Hawaii).

Larry is dumped again by the final girl in Larry 2, Kalalau. She leaves him for a lesbian cannibal Amazon slot machine repair-woman. Larry also loses his job with Kalalau's father 'Chairman Kenneth' from 'Natives Inc'.

Larry is left free to explore the resort island while waiting to arrange his divorce. Larry will again meet a number of girls, Tawni, Cherri Tart, Bambi and Suzi Cheatem, but his encounters always end up in a humiliated way.

This continues until he finds a membership card to Fat City, an institute where he will improve his body and obtain his titular pulsating pectorals. Then he will meet his "One True Love", who this time is a pianist named Passionate Patti.

In Larry 3, we will also play Patti, in her quest to find Larry who has missing in the jungle. The "Patti" portion more closely resembles a traditional adventure game, with Patti having to collect various items and use them in creative ways to solve puzzles.

The ending of Larry 3 is quite a wild ride. You can to experience it yourself for sure. You can download Leisure Suit Larry 3 here.

Leisure Suit Larry Goes Looking for Love (in Several Wrong Places) Download and Review

Leisure Suit Larry Goes Looking for Love (in Several Wrong Places) is the sequel of Leisure Suit Larry released by Sierra in 1988. It has acceptable 16-color EGA graphics and sound cards support.

The story follow what we left in Larry 1. Eve, the dream girl of Larry in the end of the previous game, has serious second thoughts in the light of day and casts him aside.

Larry begins his exploration again, and by chance he wins the lottery and a Blind Date contest in the same day. During his preparations for the cruise, a microfiche falls in his hands by mistake. He is then pursued by KGB agents as well as minions of the evil scientist Dr. Nonookee, who both want to recover the film.

His travels lead him to the tropical island Nontoonyt, where he meets Kalalau, the daughter of the natives' leader Kennywauwau. Larry enters Nonookee's lair in the heart of a volcano, where he accidentally defeats the evil doctor and wins the heart of Kalalau.

In Larry 2, Larry will still meet a number of girls, but this time he won't have any "advance" activity with them. Quite a disappointment on how Sierra did to satisfy the age verification law.

The major thing that I feel disappointed was Larry's sexual escapades in Larry 2 has been toned down. And you know what, if Larry does try to pick up random women, Larry will invariably be killed! Try to inject some moral values in a supposely adult game is kind of funny right?

Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of Lounge Lizards VGA Version Download and Review

Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards was released in 1987 with low resolution 16-color EGA graphics, but re-released in 1991 with superb 256-color VGA graphics, sound cards support and point-and-click interface.

In Leisure Suit Larry, we play Larry Laffer, a 40-year old virgin. After leaving behind his geeky life, he decides to visit the sinful city of Lost Wages (a spoof of Las Vegas), experience what he hasn't lived before, and find the woman of his dreams.

There are a number of locations that we will visit, including casino-hotel, disco, convenience store, cheap vegas-style wedding chapel, and Lefty's Bar.

In Leisure Suit Larry, we will meet four women. The first is a prostitute which leaves Larry's need for love unsatisfied. The second is Fawn, a material girl of low moral fibre.

The third is Faith, a faithful girlfriend, but of someone who is not Larry. The last one, Eve, is finally the right girl for Larry.

During the game, we have to take care of our money to not overspend on unimportant things. However, we can earn money by playing Blackjack or slots in the casino.

Leisure Suit Larry is a funny adventure game that are suitable for all over 18 to play. You can download the Leisure Suit Larry VGA version here.

The Incredible Machine 2 Download and Review

The Incredible Machine 2 was released by Sierra in 1994. It still uses 640x480 16-color VGA graphics, but this time the animation and effects are improved.

To make the game has a funnier and lighter feel, Professor Tim was introduced. Professor Tim is a cartoon character with quite some animation on him. It's kind of refreshing to see him in action.

The Incredible Machine 2 introduced new levels, an extended assortment of parts, a new interface, significantly improved graphics, sounds and music, and two player hotseat play.

It also improved on the "freeform" mode, allowing players to create completely playable puzzles by defining not only the participating parts, but also the set of circumstances under which the puzzle will be considered "solved".

In terms of gameplay, this version provided the biggest addition to the series, while subsequent updates were basically only ports of the game to newer operating systems with updated graphics/sounds and sometimes new puzzles, but no new parts.

You can get The Incredible Machine 2 here.

The Incredible Machine Download and Review

The Incredible Machine is a series of computer games that were published by Sierra. The Incredible Machine were released in 1992. It support high resolution 640x480 16-color VGA graphics and Sound Blaster for some digitized sound effects.

The general objective of the games is to arrange a given collection of objects in a needlessly complex fashion so as to perform some simple task, like "put the ball into a box" or "pop all balloons".

Available objects ranged from simple ropes and pulleys to electrical generators, bowling balls and even cats and mice. The levels usually have some fixed objects that cannot be moved by the player, and so the only way to solve the puzzle is carefully arrange the given objects around the fixed items.

There is also a "freeform" option that allows the user to "play" with all the objects with no set goal or to also build their own puzzles with goals for other players to attempt to solve.

The games simulated not only the physical interactions between objects, but also ambient effects like varying air pressure and gravity. The engine does not use a random number generator in its simulation of physics, assuring that the results for any given "machine" are reproducible.

The Incredible Machine shows the early physics simulations capabilities in computer games, and I was quite amazed by it when I first play it some where around 1995. You can download it here.

Space Quest 5: The Next Mutation Download and Review

Space Quest 5 was released in 1993 by Sierra sister company Dynamix. Even though it was released after the talkie version of Space Quest 4, Space Quest 5 does not have a talkie version. Still the graphics and soundtracks is as good as the previous chapters.

This game starts in a space station as Roger cheats to pass a StarCon Academy final exam. He's then given his own command— the garbage scow SCS Eureka, which looks like an oversized vacuum cleaner.

Space Quest 5 involves several small missions, similar to ones seen in typical Star Trek episodes. The missions make obvious reference to popular movies at that time, including Predator, Alien and The Fly. Scary Movie concept in early computer game? Yeah, and it is indeed very funny!

Roger's son from the future saved him at the beginning of SQIV, and later he shows a hologram of Roger's son's mother. Roger meets this woman in SQV and must protect her, or else his son would not exist, and thus neither would Roger.

The main plot is to stop a mutagenic disease that is spreading through the galaxy by discovering its source, and fighting everyone that got infected.

The disease infects the crew members of the SCS Goliath, the StarCon flagship, whose toupee-wearing commander, Raemes T. Quirk (a spoof of Captain Kirk), subsequently attacks the Eureka.

In the end, Roger sacrifices his ship to get rid of the plague - and suddenly, if temporarily, becomes the commander of the fleet's flagship.

If you like the previous chapters, Space Quest 5 is on that you should not missed. You can download Space Quest 5 here.

Space Quest 4: Roger Wilco and the Time Rippers

Space Quest 4 was released in 1991. There is a re-release is 1992 that feature full speech support, but unfortunately I don't have a copy of that. Space Quest 4 is the first Sierra game that support 256-color VGA graphics and point-and-click interface.

In this installment, Roger embarks on a time-travel adventure through Space Quest games both past and future.

An infomorph of reborn Sludge Vohaul from Space Quest XII chases Roger through time in an attempt to finally kill him. Roger also visits Space Quest X: Latex Babes of Estros and Space Quest I; in the latter.

When go back to Space Quest I, the graphics and music revert to the style of the original game and Roger is threatened by a group of monochromatic bikers who consider Roger's 256 colors pretentious.

An easter egg in this game is accessed by entering the code in the time capsule as the top row of buttons in order from left to right. This transports Roger to the volcanic planet of Ortega in Space Quest 3. Unfortunately, this time Roger is not wearing any thermal underwear, so if he steps out of the capsule, he melts.

There is also a mini-game in Space Quest 4, Ms. Astro Chicken: Flight of the Pullet. Ms. Astro Chicken appears within the context of the game in the form of an arcade game. It is a sequel of sorts to Astro Chicken in Space Quest 3.

The gameplay and storyline of Space Quest 4 is as good as the previous instalments. Even though it change the interface to point-and-click system, the feel of the series is still well maintained.

You can get Space Quest 4 here.
