1943: The Battle of Midway is a vertical scrolling shoot'em up game released by Capcom in 1987. 1943 is the second game in the 1940s series, following the successful 1942.
1943 is set in the pacific battles of World War II, off the coast of the Midway Atoll. The goal is to attack the Japanese Air Fleet that bombed the American Aircraft Carrier. We play as a pilot of P-38 fighter.
We need to pursue all Japanese Air and Sea forces, fly through the 16 levels, make our way to the Japanese battleship Yamato and destroy her. 11 Levels consist of an Air-to-Sea battle with a huge battleship or an aircraft carrier as an End-Level Boss, while 5 levels consist of an all-aerial battle against a squadron of Japanese Bombers and a Mother Bomber that needs to be destroyed.
The original P-38 comes with a straight gun only. During the game, after we destroy the special Japanese planes in red color, we will get different type of upgrades, including spread gun, shot gun, machine gun and missile launcher.
We can also use the special attacks like Lightning (air sections only; destroys all small flying objects), Tsunami (surface battle sections only; destroys all small flying objects, damages ships and stops scrolling for a few seconds) and Cyclone (clears all enemy fire). Using the special attacks will decrease our plane's energy rapidly.
As an arcade game, there must be some level of difficulty in the gameplay to prevent us to play for a long time with a single credit. We need to have a lot of practice just to be able to reach Yamato, and a lot more practice if we want to destroy her.
You can download the ROM of 1943: The Battle of Midway here. It is not a DOS game. You need to run the game using MAME32.
